Would a true God change direction of worship just because of some human ego clashes?

The clever among the people will say, "What has turned them away from their qiblah, which they used to face?" We changed the direction of your original Qiblah only to distinguish those among you who readily follow the messenger from those who would turn back on their heels. . (Quran 2:142-143)
