How do i pronounce "Carlisle' and how did edward from twilight turn into a vampire?

to be honest I read all the books and basically guessed at his name, but when the movie came out I found out I was completely wrong, and since I haven't seen the movies in a while I can't remember how to pronounce it now either (such a weird name). But Edward became a vampire when he was really sick, 70 years ago, and Carlisle was a doctor at the hospital he worked at. And then there's something about how he saw something special in him and thought he shouldn't die and therefore he bit him when he was like a second away from dying, then so on and so forth, Edward became a vampire. So basically, he was turned because he was dying.
